Food Information:

Know Whether your Food is Really Organicand Not Genetically Engineered:
You can find this out by checking the PLU Sticker Code. The code for organically grown food should begin with the number 9. Genetically Engineered food begins with the number 8. Conventionally grown fruits and vegetables will begin with the number 4.
"Always buy locally when possible." states Michael Pollan A writer for the New York Times Magazine.
" A transcontinental Strawberry provides 5 calories of food energy but takes 435 calories of fossil fuel energy to deliver to my door."

Get locally grown products at your local farmers markets!
Many of the growers are pesticide free and there are some that have already been certfied as organic. Always ask the grower about their farming practices. Most are more then happy to talk about how they grow their product. Buying locally grown produce means that the amount of fuel required to get it to market is considerably less. The product is fresh (many times just picked that morning or the night before) and will last longer in your refridgerator. Visit the Arizona Farmers Markets website to get information about their markets. Most have schedules with times, locations, maps, and pictures of what you might find there. Many also have arts and crafts vendors. Also on their links page is a website that lists many of the other Farmers Markets in your area.

  Safe Cleaning Products:

New article courtesy of alternativemedicine.com regarding laundry soaps and softeners (click here)

Convenient synthetic sponges are made from either wood pulp, which encourages deforestation, or polyurethane, which emits formaldehyde. Adding to the environmental impact, experts recommend replacing kitchen sponges every one to two weeks.

Pacific Dry Goods' Eco Sponge is washable and dryer safe, so you can use it again and again.

Did you know that most dishwasher detergents contain chlorine bleach, phosphates, and are highly alkaline?

    • Chlorine bleach released into the air along with the steam from you dishwasher can sometimes trigger
headaches, burning eyes, asthma, allergic reactions, and poor indoor air quality; plus you’re eating the
residue off your dishes each time a meal is served.
    • Phosphates are inexpensive water-softening agents creating a heavy price for the environment. Just one
45 oz. bottle of the leading automatic dishwasher detergent has enough phosphates to produce more than
200 pounds of massive algae growth, choking the life out of our lakes, rivers, and streams.
    • Leading automatic dishwasher detergents have a pH level of 10 or higher which can burn skin, mouth, and
eyes. This high of an alkaline level can etch dishes and ‘cloud’ glassware.

Is there a safe and healthy solution? Can I clean my dishes effectively without using harmful chemicals?
